WordPress : Change Post URL after it’s Published

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jalaj @ 1:13 pm

One of my post Regular Expressions - A Primer, in the early days of this blog, inadvertently got misspelled. Though I changed the page title, the URL remained the same.

I assume a few Bloggers would reach this page after getting into same problem.

When you need to change a Permalink/URL of a post, open it in editing mode and look for a section “Post Slug” on the right side. If closed it will look like one below.

Open it. The text contained in this field is the one that is used for the permalink. So if you got it wrong, just change it here and save the page again and the problem rectifies.

However if your page is already indexed by Google then it’s advisable that you continue without changing it. Otherwise visitors following the Search results would find a “404-File not found”. If you have access to Google Webmaster Tools you can get the page removed from the index and Google would index the new one in the meantime. This step is advisable only when your page is not old enough to get a PR and not linked by External pages.
